What is a DBT consultation team?

One of the aspects of adherent DBT is that professionals providing treatment attend a weekly consultation team meetings. The consultation team can be comprised of different mental health professionals such as therapists, case managers, psychiatrists, or psychologists. The team meets weekly to support each other while providing DBT often to clients who have a high risk for suicidal behaviors. DBT helps individuals address safety interfering behaviors, therapy interfering behaviors, and quality of life interfering behaviors. While working with clients to address these concerns, there can be burnout for the clinical team in which they can become overwhelmed and less motivated to provide care. Being on a consultation team has shown to reduce burnout and compassion fatigue in mental health professionals as well as bolstering understanding and implementation of DBT concepts.

For individuals applying for the distinction of being a Linehan Board Certified-Dialectical Behavior Therapist, applicants must attend a weekly consultation team for at least 12-months. Attending the consultation team with me on a consistent basis will help you to satisfy this requirement.

What does a DBT consultation team meeting entail?

Typically a consultation team meeting includes a mindful moment or practice led by a different member each week. The team discusses DBT cases and members are able to provide clinical suggestions through the lens of DBT. Members can seek guidance on addressing common client issues including suicide risk, therapy interfering behaviors, etc. Members are able to share with vulnerability and openness while practicing their own DBT skills. Consultation team meetings are also an opportunity for practicing behavior chain analyses, skills rehearsal, the 6 levels of validation, using behaviorally specific language, and emotion regulation skills.
